What is your average class size and how do the multi-age classes work?
Saint Michael’s School has fifty-three students in pre-school through 6th grade. This small size makes for a wonderful learning environment where every teacher in the school knows every student, and every student knows every other student. Our kindergarten class has averaged 9 students the last few years. Our older classes are combined, with first and second grade sharing a class, as do the third and fourth grade, and the fifth and sixth grade. While still averaging less than 20 students per classroom, these multi-age classrooms offer some special advantages over traditional classrooms: students in multi-age classroom experience more varied classrooms discussions and relationships as students from different ages participate at different levels; students learn the skills necessary to work independently while the teacher focuses on the other groups; and in a multi-age approach, the teacher can work with children where they are and not where they are supposed to be based on age alone – for example, a first grader reading at a second grade level can easily be moved up to participate with the second graders in the same classroom.
Do you have bussing?
Free bussing is available for anyone living within the Coopersville school district. For families living in the Allendale area, an active carpool group exists to transport Allendale children to St. Michael’s – even if the parents are unable to take part in the actual driving duties. Contact our school secretary for details.
How do Saint Michael’s students score on standardized tests?
SMS students score at or above diocesan averages. SMS students are also seen as leaders both academically and socially as they move on to Coopersville junior and senior high school.
What is St. Michael’s daily and yearly schedule?
St. Michael’s School follows the Coopersville Area Public School District’s yearly schedule with a few minor variations. A yearly schedule is available late in the spring for the following school year. School begins each morning at 8:45 for all students. Preschool students attend either a M-W-F session for 4-year-olds or a T-Th session for 3-year-olds, and are dismissed at 11:15. Students in grades K-6 are dismissed at 3:20. Kindergarten students attend school three whole days a week.
Do you provide hot lunch?
Hot lunch is provided three days a week by the Coopersville Area Public School District. Milk is available every day of the week.
Do you have a uniform dress code?
St. Michael students wear uniforms four days a week. The uniforms consist of navy, khaki, or black pants or skirt with a solid color golf style shirt in blue, black or red. On Tuesdays, when students participate in gym and art, the students are not required to wear a uniform, but must still dress in an appropriate manner for a school environment.
How do parents get involved in your school?
St. Michael’s School thrives on the involvement of parents and grandparents. Volunteers are welcome in any number of areas such as hot lunch servers, librarians, classroom aids, and recess monitors to name just a few. Please contact the Home and School President for more information concerning volunteer involvement. |
